A mere congregation of individuals or a defined geographic area does not constitute a nation. Nor does the passage of time automatically forge national identity. Such a structure may form a state, but not a nation. What truly defines a nation is a common goal—a shared mission that inspires all its people to work together for a noble cause. When service is offered with a spiritual orientation, it leads to man-making, a process inseparably connected with nation-building.
This profound philosophy lies at the heart of Vivekananda Kendra.
During the construction of the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, another parallel mission was silently taking shape. As Mananeeya Eknathji Ranade, the visionary behind the Memorial, often said:
"To put up a cement and concrete structure is not the work for which I am born. I am to erect a living and dynamic monument worthy of Swami Vivekananda—capable of bringing his grand vision of future India into reality."
Thus, in 1972, Vivekananda Kendra was born—an extraordinary organisation built by ordinary men. It is a spiritually-oriented service mission, created as a living memorial to Swami Vivekananda. This dynamic organisation is powered by dedicated Jeevanvratis, Sevavratis, Vanaprasthis, thousands of local Karyakartas, and supported by lakhs of well-wishers, patrons, and publication subscribers.
Vivekananda Kendra operates with the guiding ideals of Renunciation and Service, based on the belief that "Service to man is worship of God."
To actualise the vision of Swami Vivekananda, Vivekananda Kendra today has over 225 branch centres across India. These centres serve all sections of society, working tirelessly to rebuild and rejuvenate the nation through:
- Yoga and Personality Development
- Swadhyaya Varga (Study Circles)
- Samskar Varga (Cultural Classes for Children)
- Rural Development and Education
- Natural Resource Development
- Youth and Women Empowerment
